Highlight: Penang exco, assemblymen declare assets - The Edge Malaysia

GEORGE TOWN (Aug 6): The Penang government has expanded its assets declaration policy, which previously involved only state executive councillors, to also include the assets for all Pakatan Rakyat state assemblymen.

With this, Penang is the only state in the country to commit to assets declaration, covering aspects such as properties, bank deposits, vehicles, shares and other investments, on such a scale.

The details of the declarations will be uploaded onto the state government official website tomorrow.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said this was in line with the Pakatan Rakyat state manifesto from the last general election to have all elected reps declare their assets.

He also expressed hope that other states, whether controlled by Pakatan Rakyat or Barisan Nasional, would undertake a similar policy.

"We want the Selangor government and other Pakatan Rakyat-controlled states to also do the same," he said.

He stressed that he has been under pressure over the issue, as there have been arguments put to him that revealing assets so openly would affect the safety of the reps.

"What we want to show is that it is safe to declare assets," he said at a press conference attended by executive councillors and Pakatan state assemblymen.
