Inquest for Penang freak storm victim on Sept 2 - The Star Online

GEORGE TOWN: The inquest into the death of a hawker, whose body is believed to be still buried about 40m underground after his car was struck by a falling lightning arrester more than a month ago, has been fixed for Sept 2 to 6.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said Sessions Court judge Khairul Anuar Abd Halim would preside as coroner at the inquest that would be held at the Sessions Court here.

The family of the victim, economy rice seller Lim Chin Aik, 44, has been informed of the inquest, he said at the Sungai Nibong police station here yesterday.

ACP Gan said the inquest findings would also enable the coroner to decide if a death certificate could be issued for Lim.

It was reported that Lim's family could not obtain a death certificate from the National Registration Department (NRD) because it could only be issued if his body was recovered or medical personnel were able to confirm his death.

Failing that, a death certificate can be issued upon submission of a completed death registration form or an NRD burial permit, which are also not possible in Lim's case.

His remains are believed to be buried deep in Jalan Macalister here, where the lightning arrester from the 21-storey Menara Umno snapped off and fell during a freak storm on the evening of June 13.

Lim was presumed dead when what was identified as pieces of his car, along with a plate bearing the car's chassis number, were found in the crater that resulted from the arrester impacting the ground.

Search and rescue efforts had to be called off when continuous digging at the crater started to cause cracks on nearby buildings.

On June 23, Lim was "laid to rest" in a simple funeral ceremony at the Kek Lok Si Columbarium, where an urn containing mud which his wife, Lee Chai Song, 48, had scooped from the crater, was placed there.
