Karpal, Anwar deny RM50mil bribe allegations - The Star Online

PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and DAP chairman Karpal Singh have lodged a police report regarding allegations Karpal was given RM50mil to bribe judges and prosecutors.

Karpal, who is also Bukit Gelugor MP, denied the allegations, describing it as "ridiculous" and "reckless".

"I take this matter very seriously. There is no question of any payment," he said after lodging the report at the Tropicana police station on Sunday.

The report was lodged against Dr Mazlan Ismail, who contested against Anwar in Permatang Pauh, and a few media companies.

Dr Mazlan, the BN candidate during the recent elections was reported to have said on Friday that he received over 6,000 letters alleging Anwar paid Karpal RM50mil to bribe judges and prosecutors.

In a press conference, Karpal challenged Dr Mazlan to provide details and identify the source of the allegations.

"I challenge him to produce the bank accounts, cheque numbers and the identity of the person behind the allegations in the anonymous letter, who is said to be my former staff," he added.

Karpal urged authorities to investigate Dr Mazlan's claims.

"The Attorney-General's Chambers and the Chief Justice (Tun Ariffin Zakaria) cannot sit back. They have to respond in defence of the judiciary as the allegations have brought it into disrepute," he said.
