He said he was never against the matter and was in fact a strong advocate for it.

"I will only wait (to declare my assets) until the chief minister fixes a date for it. "All DAP MPs, excos, assemblymen and even appointed municipal councillors are required to declare their assets.

"If you are in public office, you must be ready to be scrutinised by the public and voters," he told a press conference here today.

He also said the other Pakatan parties and Barisan Nasional leaders should instruct their elected representatives to declare their assets as well.

Karpal was responding to calls that he and Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should declare their assets following recent allegations that the latter had paid him RM50 million in cheques since 2008.

Based on the allegations stated in some 6,000 letters sent to Barisan Nasional's Permatang Pauh candidate Dr Mazlan Ismail recently, the RM50 million was to pay Karpal legal fees and to bribe judges and prosecutors.

Both opposition leaders had immediately denied the claims, lodged police reports and said they would take legal action against the media organisations that published the news on the allegations.
