Karpal will publicly declare his assets at time fixed by CM - The Malay Mail Online

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 10 — Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh has no problems publicly declaring his assets but at a time fixed by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

The parliamentarian is adamant that he will make his assets public only when it is ready and at a time fixed by Lim.

"It is not that I am waiting for the chief minister to give the order but this declaration of assets needs time, we need to go through the auditor for verification," Karpal (picture) said.

The DAP national chairman said he has already made it clear that he will not entertain demands by "inconsequential and irrelevant" personalities.

"All DAP elected representatives — MPs, state assemblymen and state executive councillors — nationwide will be required to publicly declare their assets," he said.

The lawyer, who is also known as the "Tiger of Jelutong" in Penang, has always been a strong advocate of public declaration of assets by public personalities.

"You are in public life, you must be prepared to have your records scrutinised by the public," he said.

Likewise in Selangor, Karpal said Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim should direct his state executive councillors, including himself, and all MPs and state assemblymen in the state to follow the example of the Penang state government.

Early this week, the Penang state government publicly declared the assets of all Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state assemblymen and uploaded the information on the state's official website.

"I will also call on PKR and PAS to follow suit by instructing all their state assemblymen to publicly declare their assets," said Karpal.

In fact, Karpal said PR should go beyond asking only elected representatives to publicly declare their assets but to also ask its municipal councillors to do the same.

Similarly, Karpal reiterated his call to Barisan Nasional and the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to instruct all BN state assemblymen and MPs to publicly declare their assets.

"I dare BN to do this," he said.

On Balik Pulau MP Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya's remarks that all BN elected representatives already declare their assets to the prime minister, Karpal said Hilmi should get the right perspective.

"They should be declaring it to the public, not only to Najib," he said.
